HOW DID YOU GET INTO TRUCK DRIVING?

I’ve been around trucks for most of my life. My step grandfather was a trucker his whole life, with 5 million miles hauling cows. His stepsons and grandson all hauled cows, too. When I was in high school, I got a part-time job driving for a hog farmer. I’d go to school then work hauling hogs to market. When I finished high school, I went to college during the day, worked as a nursing aide at night, and then worked on a farm on the weekends. It paid for my car, house and insurance. The plan was to be a mechanic, but I ended up becoming a welder. I traveled around to job sites and worked on power plants, oil refineries and cement plants. It was after I met my wife that I decided to become a truck driver. We decided to go to trucking school to get our CDLs so we could team together. She wanted to see the USA and she did! We got to see 48 states. We’ve been married for 11 years now.

WHAT KIND OF TRUCKING EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU HAD?

I was a team driver with my wife for six months. Then we both went solo, driving flatbed. We used to meet up at truck stops while we were both on the road. When that company got bought out, I didn’t like the new company, so I turned my truck in. She eventually decided to get off the road and she is now the general manager at a store back home. All in all, I’ve been driving for 17 years now. In addition to driving OTR, I’ve hauled on local routes and driven tankers.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO ACT?

I was ready to stop working local when I saw an ACT ad pop up on Facebook one day. I called the recruiter and found out about the job. I really like that ACT isn’t a giant company and that it is located out of Kansas City. I live about 90 miles away from the headquarters and I really prefer a smaller company because they get to know you. Now, when I walk in at ACT they recognize me be name and face. The mechanic, too.

HOW’S IT GOING NOW?

It’s going great. The people at ACT are awesome. I don’t like to sit. I’m old fashioned. You don’t get money if you’re not moving. I get 2,500 to 3,000 miles a week and I’ve hit 100,000 miles with them already. I like to work harder to meet my financial goals. I don’t want to have to pay a house payment when I’m in my 60s. My house will be paid off in 3 years and I bought my wife a new car for Mother’s Day. Right now, I’m going to a trainer program to learn to be a trainer. ACT has a great program for new drivers where you get to learn from 3 different trainers for two weeks each instead of staying with just one trainer for six weeks.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL OTHER DRIVERS ABOUT THIS COMPANY?

The people at ACT are all very nice people. They’re easier to work with and they care about you. You get the miles if you want them. They send me my load and then they don’t mess with you or micromanage you. Plus, they pay for experience.

I AM ACT.
